Should we raise the ceiling or the floor?

Ceiling.

In general, the floor will take care of itself. Put another way, ~anyone can raise the floor, but few can raise the ceiling. If you deprive the world of a potential celing-raise, that's a huge travesty that will have ~unlimited negative impact on humanity forever.

Imagine if modern medicine had been discovered 100 years sooner. How many lives would have been saved?

Now imagine the scientist discovering the tech behind these medicines. They could either sit in the lab taking moonshots, trying to become famous & save the world, or they could be outside providing medical care to 3rd-world countries.
